GOAL Industry Affairs – The expertise and knowledge of healthcare information professionals frame and lead healthcare legislation, regulations, policies, standards and practices. 2004

United States Technical Advisory Group US TAG Activities 2004

Focus on Standards Initiatives 2003: HIMSS appointed secretary of ISO/TC 215 and administrator of the US technical advisory group (US TAG) by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 2005: Standards activities include: HIMSS committees, task forces and work groups National and International involvement 2004

US Technical Advisory Group Who US citizens who are specifically interested in a particular area of knowledge, in this case Health Informatics Experts, could be University faculty or informatics specialists Vendors, who use or market products that use standards End Users, using the product within their area of knowledge or practice 2004

US TAG for ISO/TC 215 Each country that holds membership in an international technical committee has a national special interest group In the US this group is called a technical advisory group (TAG) This TAG is specifically organized to work with health informatics 2004

US TAG What United States technical advisory group to the international Organization of Standardization (ISO) technical committee (TC) 215 Health Informatics TAG members decide the US position on new and updated health informatics standards Provide content expertise to health informatics standards development 2004

US TAG When This group meets 2 times a year, March and November Communication occurs in several ways E-mail Telephone conferences Face-to-face meetings Web conferences (coming soon) Membership E-mail adickerson@himss.org 2004

TAG Member Functions Initiate and approve new work items within the TAG for possible inclusion into the ISO/TC 215 work program Be a part of the consensus building process for draft ISO standards Represent the US on the ISO/TC 215 international committee 2004

Member Functions Nominate US experts to serve on an ISO/TC 215 working group Establish liaison with other US TAG committees with similar field of interest Recommend that ANSI invite ISO committees to hold meetings in the US 2004

TAG Membership Benefits Opportunity to collaborate with National and International experts, vendors and end users in a collegiate atmosphere Become a delegate to an International ISO Plenary meeting- each Spring- 2005 May Participate in building US consensus on draft ISO deliverables 2004

Overview of ISO/TC 215 Health Informatics Standardization 2004

ISO TC 215 Health Informatics Chair : Yun Sik Kwak, MD, PhD (Korea/USA) until 2006 Secretariat : ANSI (USA) Secretary : Audrey Dickerson, MS, RN (HIMSS, USA)) Scope : Standardization in the field of information for health, and Health Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to achieve compatibility and interoperability between independent systems. Also, to ensure compatibility of data for comparative statistical purposes (e.g. classifications), and to reduce duplication of effort and redundancies. 2004
