The characteristics of life.

1. ALL LIVING THINGS ARE MADE OF ________________ A CELL IS THE SMALLEST LIVING UNIT THAT CAN CARRY OUT LIFE PROCESSES.

Single celled (___________________) organisms makeup most organisms on Earth. They have everything they need to be self-sufficient. In _______________________ organisms, the cells specialize to perform specific functions (bone cells, skin cells, muscle cells, root cells, leaf cells).

Nutrients = Food, water, air 2. Take in nutrients to create _____________ Nutrients = Food, water, air __________________ (plants) trap the energy of the Sun and make food in the process called photosynthesis. _____________________ (animals) get their nutrients from the producers or other consumers!

In order to get the energy, all living thing go through __________________- A process in which organisms use the oxygen in the air to turn food into energy.

3.All living things ________ !! Animals move their whole bodies to get from one place to another. Plants turn towards the light and their roots grow down into the soil.

4. All living things produce waste!! _____________ - to remove waste substances from the body. Plants and animals both need to get rid of waste gas and water.

______________ TO A STIMULUS 5. ALL LIVING THINGS ______________ TO A STIMULUS Living things respond to immediate and long-term changes in their environment (shiver when cold, change fur color, plants bend toward light). Why is this important? ________________________- organism must be able to make constant adjustments to maintain stable conditions no matter what is occurring inside or outside of organism, if not survival decreases

Responding to Stimuli a. dogs pant when hot b. pupils dilate in lower light levels c. humans sweat when body gets too hot d. reflexes – touch hot stove, fight/flight

6. ALL LIVING THINGS _____________ TO FIT THEIR ENVIRONMENT Organisms must adapt to changes in their environment or risk becoming extinct. Adaptations occur over a very long period of time (millions of years).

Name some the adaptations of these organisms.

7. ALL LIVING THINGS _______________________ Reproduction must occur for a species to survive. Animals have babies. New plants grow from seeds.

8. ALL LIVING THINGS _______________________________ (The life cycle) To grow means to get bigger and to get bigger Develop means to change into an adult form (mature). Living things die

WHAT DID YOU LEARN? Define: living, dead, nonliving. * Living organisms must show ALL characteristics of life. *Dead organisms ONCE showed ALL characteristics but now do not. *Nonliving things do not have all characteristics. 2. Define: multicellular, unicellular Multicellular- more than one cell. Unicellular – made of only one cell 3. What are the 8 characteristics of life?

Grow/Develop (life Cycle) Respond to environment The characteristics of life. Made of Cells Reproduce Use energy/Respire Move Create Waste/ Excrete Adapt Grow/Develop (life Cycle) Respond to environment
