Biology- The study of life. What is life Biology- The study of life. What is life? What do all living things share?

Living Nonliving

What does it mean to say that something no longer has life?

There are 8 characteristics that all living things share…

1. All Living Things Can REPRODUCE

Examples: Animals a) Requires two organisms (male & female) A. Two types I. Sexual Reproduction. a) Requires two organisms (male & female) Examples: Animals

Plants

II. Asexual Reproduction a) Needs only one organism. (simply split in half ) Example: Bacteria

2. All Living Things can Obtain Energy Organisms get energy in different ways.

Plants use photosynthesis to make energy.

Animals get energy by eating other organisms.

3. All Living Things RESPOND to Changes in the Environment

Stimulus is anything that causes an organism to react. Examples: Light Temperature Sound

4.Homeostasis is the ability to keep internal body conditions the same at all times. This allows them to maintain a stable internal environment. Examples Body Temperature Heart Rate Blood Levels

5. All Living Things can Grow and Develop

Grow means to increasing in size.

Develop means to changing body structure. Example: A tadpole changing into a frog. Caterpillar changes into a butterfly.

Tadpole

Frog

Caterpillar

Cacoon

Butterfly

Homework Summarize what you learned today on the back page of notes. (3-5 sentences)

Wednesday Aug. 29 Bell ringer Explain a situation when homeostasis is needed for the survival of an organism. Hint: Look back at yesterdays notes to find the definition of homeostasis!!

6. All living things are made up of cells

A. Unicellular Organisms have only one cell. Examples: a) Bacteria b) Protozoan

B. Multicellular organisms have many cells Examples: a) Plants b) Animals

7. All Living Things Have Genetic Material

A.) Genes 1) Are found on the DNA. 2) Genes determine the traits of an organism. B.) Adaptation 1) A trait the helps an organism to survive. Examples: Teeth Claws Eyes 2) Are passed down from parents to offspring.

8. All living things have a limited life span.

Causes body processes to slow down. A. Living things age. Causes body processes to slow down. 2. Results in death.
