The Introductory Paragraph An introduction is the first paragraph in your essay and contains the thesis statement. The major goals of an introduction: a) present the focus of your essay and give your reader some general information about your subject. b) attract your reader’s attention so that he will be interested in your essay.

The Introductory Paragraph In an introduction paragraph, you always need general statements about your topic and a thesis statement that shows the focus of your essay. The thesis statement is usually the last sentence in the introduction because it is the most specific.

The Introductory Paragraph:Sample GENERAL STATEMENTS Marriage is an agreement which brings together two people who agree to support and love each other. An ideal marriage is when both sides love each other and plan on living together for the rest of their lives. However, not all marriages are ideal, and problems that arise can cause the end of the marriage and lead to divorce.
