American Revolution Title Page Standard 8-2 Indicators: 8-2.1, 8-2.2, 8-2.3, 8-2.4, 8-2.5 1 Picture with COLOR 3 words

8-2 Standard: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the causes of the American Revolution and the beginnings of the new nation, with an emphasis on South Carolina’s role in the development of that nation.

Indicator 8-2.1: Explain the political and economic consequences of the French and Indian War on the relationship of the South Carolina colonists with Native Americans and England. .

Where We are at…. England, Spain and France have colonies in America Reminder: England is part of Great Britain

Where We are at…. As we discuss the French and Indian War, keep in mind… Britain relies heavily upon mercantilism to pay for Wars (including this one) even though they have been practicing salutary neglect. Almost all American colonists are still loyal to Great Britain – proud British citizens!

Where We are at…. - BUT, the boundary lines between the English, Spanish, French and Native American territories are blurred…War is brewing…

By the 1700s, France and England were the strongest nations in Europe Both countries wanted to expand and control colonies and trade in America. Eng. wanted to take over French fur trade. Eng. wanted to expand west of Appalachian Mts. BUT this land was French territory.

Before the French and Indian War

French & Indian War WAR erupted in 1754 over disputed claims by England and France over the Ohio River Valley (fur trade = $$$) Most Native tribes sided with French Mother Countries fought also - called the Seven Year’s war in Europe

Who Fought??? British and their American Colonists French Colonists and Most Native Americans

French & Indian War In 1754, Virginia Governor sent George Washington, a 22 year old Lieutenant Colonel in the Virginia Militia, to fight the French. He had 150 militiamen. Washington’s job was to force the French to withdraw from Virginia. BUT the French attacked and defeated Washington’s colonial militia. This was the first battle of the French & Indian War.

Getting Ugly in SC… In SC, fighting took place in the Backcountry and became known as the… Cherokee War – Cherokee Indians versus British Backcountry settlers Cherokee decided to help the “Friendly French” and fight the British settlers because the British did NOT defend them and violated land/trade agreements Natives were winning and things were BAD for the British 

NFW Prompt Based on your notes, predict how the relationship between the colonists and Great Britain is going to change because of the French and Indian War.

But then….England makes a move… In 1756, King George II’s leading minister William Pitt decided to save North America for the British Empire The tide of the war began to change when the British seized numerous French forts in New York and took the city of Quebec in Canada. The French lost not only the war but also most of their territory in North America.

Treaty of Paris The French and Indian War ended in 1763 when the British and French signed the Treaty of Paris. It established England as the dominant European presence in North America British gained Canada British also gained Florida from Spain. British were now supreme in North America French were ashamed 

After the French and Indian War

8-2.1 Reminder… Three wars wrapped up into one… The Seven Year’s War (Europe) Great Britain versus France The French and Indian War (America) Great Britain and their American Colonists versus France and Native Americans, 1754 - 1763 The Cherokee War (Carolina Back Country) Carolina Colonists versus Cherokee

Writing Prompt: How did the British colony of South Carolina benefit from the French and Indian War? Do you think what they gained was worth the taxes they had to pay?
