Plagiarism... What is it? using someone’s work without giving them credit Why is it bad? a form of stealing, breaking the law How can you avoid it? use direct quotes, paraphrase, give credit

Internal Citations (in-text citation) What is an internal citation (sometimes referred to as in-text citation)? An internal citation appears at the end of a paraphrase or direct quote It states the author’s last name and page number where you got your information from Internal citations have parenthesis around them Six million years ago, apes came down from the trees and learned to live on the ground (Winston 22).

Internal Citations... First time you use a source the internal citation needs (author #). If you use same source again = (#) If you use a different source = (author #) If you go back to first source = (author #)

Direct Quotes Using the author’s words exactly the way they appear in their original text. When a direct quote is used as a sentence alone, just place quotation marks around the original text. “There was no sound in the night as Rainsford sat there but the muffled throb of the engine that drove the yacht swiftly through the darkness, and the swish and ripple of the wash of the propeller” (Connell 2).

Introducing Direct Quotes Know the reason why you are introducing this quote. Other suggestions: Say the novel or author Say the character’s name you are talking about In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell describes the character General Zaroff as proper man with “[…]a cultivated voice marked by a slight accent that gave it added precision and deliberateness” (Connell 4).

More about Direct Quotes If the direct quote is a quote within a text or character dialogue, place the direct quote in quotation marks, but add one quotation around the quoted quote like this: In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the character Whitney demonstrates his compassion for the jaguar when he states that “ ‘ [...] they understand one thing -- fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death’ “ (Connell 1).

Changing the Direct Quote If you change any of the original text in the quote in order to fit the flow of your essay, place brackets [ ] around your changed information, and if you leave information out of the text, add an ellipse . . . like this: Changed Quote: In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the character Whitney demonstrates his compassion for the jaguar when he states that “ ‘ [...] they understand one thing -- fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death’ “ (Connell 1).

Paraphrasing... Lastly, paraphrasing is when you take information from a source and restate the information in your own words. Place an internal citation at the end of your paraphrase.

Homework Write one paragraph answering the Essential Question for Quarter 1. Use the two sources below to support your answer. “The Most Dangerous Game” “Killer of Cecil the Lion Finds Out That He is a Target Now, of Internet Vigilantism”
