CONSECUTIVE INTEGERS Consecutive Integers are numbers in Counting Order. Ex: 7,8,9,… Integers beginning with an Even number counting by TWO are Consecutive Even Integers. Ex: 2,4,6,… Integers beginning with Odd number counting by TWO are Consecutive Odd Integers. Ex: -5, -3, -1, 1, …

Finding Consecutive Integers Find 3 consecutive integers whose sum is 42 Looking for 3 numbers in counting order n = 1st number how do you get the next number? n + 1 = 2nd number n+2 = 3rd number

Finding Consecutive Integers Now use those expressions to find the sum Sum means to add 1st term + 2nd term + 3rd term = total n + (n+1) + (n+2) = 42 Simplify (Combine like terms) 3n + 3 = 42 Solve for n n = 13 Write the 3 integers starting with n as the first 13,14,15

Examples Find 4 consecutive integers whose sum is 94. Find 3 consecutive integers whose sum is -12.

Consecutive Odd Integers If n is the 1st odd term, how do we find the next odd term? 1, 3, 5, … Can I still add 1 to the first term? n, n+2,… How do I find the next term from n? n, n+2, n+4, n+6, … So on This rule applies to Consecutive Even and Odd Numbers

EXAMPLES Find 3 Consecutive even integers whose sum is -42. Find 4 consecutive odd integers whose sum is 8. Find 2 consecutive odd integers whose sum is 116. Find 3 consecutive even integers whose sum is 396.
