Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as replacement therapy De Keyser M 1, De Belder M 2, De Groot V 1,3. 1, University of Antwerp, dep. Medicine, Belgium; 2, University of Ghent, dep. Experimental Psychology, Belgium; 3, Antwerp University Hospital, dep. Ophthalmology, Belgium Introduction Material and Methods Glaucoma remains a chronical disease. Decades of taking topical medication influences ocular surface and quality of life. Diminishing adherence to the local therapy can lead to disease progression. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has proven its value as a primary therapy and as adjuvant therapy in glaucoma and ocular hypertension. We examined if SLT could be used as replacement therapy in glaucoma patients controlled under medication. Laser technique: Q-switched Nd:YAG 102.03 spots over 360° 1.1 ± 0.3mJ Randomized Prospective Clinical Trial 143 patients Inclusion criteria: - primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) ocular hypertension controlled intraocular pressure (IOP) with medication Exclusion criteria: - other glaucoma than POAG - previous trabeculectomy or trabeculoplasty Methods: - registration of IOP - measurement of number of medication after 1h, 1w, 1, 3, 6 and 12m Results Conclusions 1. SLT maintained good IOP control No change in control group SLT maintains good IOP control SLT reduces amount of medications needed 74% of patients no longer needed any medication after 12m 22% needed one medication after 12m 2. SLT lowered # of medications needed No change in control group We have no conflict of interest to disclose References Fechtner RD, Godfrey DG, Budenz D, Stewart JA, Stewart WC & Jasek MC (2010): Prevalence of Ocular Surface Complaints in Patients With Glaucoma Using Topical Intraocular Pressure–Lowering Medications.
