RUKEWE A*, FATIREGUN A++, ALONGE TO** PEDIATRIC REGIONAL ANESTHESIA FOR EXTREMITY SURGERIES IN A NIGERIAN HOSPITAL RUKEWE A*, FATIREGUN A++, ALONGE TO** Departments of * Anaesthesia, ** Orthopaedics & Trauma, and ++ Epidemiology & Medical Statistics, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Range 10–840 Range 10–840 BACKGROUND RESULTS Regional blocks can be used as an alternative or adjunct to general anesthesia for surgeries of the extremities in children. Out of 180 children, 136 had orthopedic surgeries and 44 had plastic reconstructive procedures. The demographic and block data are shown in Tables 1. There were 128 (71.1%) spinals, 26 (14.4%) Brachial plexus blocks for upper limb surgeries and 26 (14.4%) lower extremity blocks. In 14 (7.8%) cases, regional blocks were used as adjuncts to general anesthesia but in the rest, ketamine-midazolam or ketamine-diazepam sedation was employed. OBJECTIVES We describe the use of spinal blocks and peripheral regional anesthesia among a cohort of children < 15 years in our center. MATERIALS & METHODS Anesthetic records of one hundred and eighty children between the ages of 1 and 14 years who had regional block for extremity procedures were retrospectively reviewed from 2008 – 2014. Consent was obtained from the parents/guardian of each child for procedure.. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that pediatric regional anesthesia was successfully used for extremity surgeries in children.Copy and paste your text content here, adjusting the font size to fit.
