What does GTC Scotland do? accredits all teaching programmes and some professional learning programmes regulates the profession by controlling access to and removal from the Register, using standards for competence and codes of conduct promotes professionalism through a suite of professional standards, codes of conduct, professional recognition awards and Professional Update

How do criminal record checks work? You must be a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme through Disclosure Scotland: Full or Short (Existing) scheme check – likely to be existing scheme member due to placements 3 forms of ID needed – photocopies only

You must apply – it is a legal requirement You apply online: Available from November Choose FIVE local authority preferences or choose Preference Waiver (go anywhere) Dual Qualified and Sponsored Students Online declaration Disability monitoring Direct debit mandate

What routes are there to becoming a fully registered teacher? Routes for probationer teachers: Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) 2. Flexible Route (FR)

What is the Teacher Induction Scheme? Eligible if completing a TQ at a Scottish University and you are a UK or EU citizen Funded by Scottish Government Guaranteed employment by a local authority Takes 190 days (1 continuous school year) Only available on a full-time basis Reduced class contact time to 80%, the rest is to allow for extra professional learning (about 18 hours a week) Support at school and local authority levels Time limit 3 years Must meet Standard for Full Registration “Scotland’s approach to Teacher Induction is World Class” (OECD Report)

What’s the Flexible Route? Can be employed by local authority or independent schools Can choose own local authority Can work part-time BUT ... It takes 270 days (about a year and a half) You must find your own post No guaranteed work or support Time limit 5 years Must still meet Standard for Full Registration FR If you are eligible for TIS you can choose FR Has been designed so that probationers have the flexibility to be able to complete their probation -Within five years at their own pace -Does mean that you will have to find employment in order to complete this Indy schools not part of TIS Can do in 190 days so long as the school and LA are willing to sign off on your records Can go abroad and complete probation however there are certain rules surrounding this so please check this out on our webpage Support is there but it is not as structured as TIS

(*TIS is strongly recommended So what now? First, you need to decide whether to: Proceed through TIS* (if eligible) OR Proceed through FR (*TIS is strongly recommended if you are eligible)

What happens if I choose TIS? You will need to decide whether to: Choose FIVE local authorities in order of preference OR Choose the Preference Waiver Option (willing to go anywhere)

What happens if I choose TIS? You need to make 5 preferred local authorities choices: Think carefully about your circumstances Think carefully about location: there’s a map on the online application form and links to some local authority information on the in2teaching website Remember you could be allocated your 5th choice

What happens if I choose PWP? You can be allocated to a vacancy anywhere in Scotland You are given financial assistance of £6,000 in Primary and £8,000 in Secondary (due to difficulties in placing in Secondary) payable in 3 instalments (August, January and April during your TIS year) paid by the allocated local authority

You ALSO need to think about.. No matter whether you choose 5 preferences or the Preference Waiver option, you need to think about: Gaelic Medium you should indicate this on the application Denominational approval may/will be needed by the Catholic Church (see SCES website) but vacancies not guaranteed Disabilities you are advised to disclose in order to be supported and placed appropriately, but it’s a personal choice Withdrawing from your course you must inform us immediately if you leave your course Deferrals only eligible to apply in exceptional circumstances beyond your control Dual Qualification need to choose if you are completing your probation in one or two subjects for registration

Deferring from your course Involuntary Voluntary (Initiated by university) No Deferral Decided by GTCS Panel Deferred Travel purposes (including teaching abroad) Confirmed and ongoing medical condition Pregnancy Not going to complete on time Further studies Delegated Carer Alternative career option Undelegated Carer Teaching in independent sector Dissatisfaction with TIS Allocation or school allocation

Allocation Process System will match you to one of your preferred local authorities but, unlike student placements, it takes no account of: Your personal circumstances Your address

Dual Qualified Teachers If you are studying towards dual qualification, you have the option to complete your probationary period in both subjects Become provisionally registered in both subjects This is voluntary

Dual Qualified Teachers You can qualify in one of the following: Sciences any 2 from Biology, Chemistry, Physics Social Subjects and Religious Education any 2 from Geography, History, Modern Studies, Religious Education Modern Foreign Languages any 2 from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish Computing with Business Education or Mathematics Drama with Music or English Physics with Mathematics Gaelic and any subject

Sponsored Students You will complete your probation in the local authority that is sponsoring you This is in agreement between you, the university and the local authority You will not be eligible for PWP Ability to select 5 local authorities will be removed from online application

So what happens next? Complete your EPVG and hand back to your university administrator by mid-December Choose your 5 local authorities before mid-December Make changes online through your MyGTCS account until Friday 16 February 2018: switching your 5 preferences to PWP or vice versa change your local authority preferences and their order change from dual qualified to single qualified Will receive a confirmation email when changes are made and they will show on your MyGTCS page

What are the timescales? November – December 2017 Students apply for registration Students complete EPVG scheme GTCS start processing EPVG scheme applications (approximately 3,500) 16 February 2018 No further changes to preferences or dual option End of May 2018 Students informed of allocated local authority by email and MyGTCS July: Registration completed
