Geography Learning Journey – Our Local Area Year 2 – Summer Term 2015 What are the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, what are the names of their capital cities? What vocabulary can we use to describe Greenodd? What amenities are there in the village? Where is our school located? Use Google Maps and aerial photos to locate Penny Bridge Academy. Locate Greenodd within Cumbria, Cumbria within the UK and the UK within a map of the world, observing the equator and the northern and southern hemispheres. Walk around Greenodd and identify the main human and physical features (school, church, bakers, village shop, pub, bus stops etc.) Use atlases to study a map of the UK. On own A4 copy of map label England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the four capital cities, the surrounding oceans and highest mountains. Study weather maps for the UK. What symbols are used to represent different types of weather? What are the common seasonal weather patterns for Cumbria? How can I create a simple map of Greenodd village with features located in the correct places? Study data to identify average temperatures and rainfall in Cumbria during different months and seasons. Use information from walk around to create a simple map of the village with significant buildings and features labelled. Study weather maps for the UK and use them to write a weather report. (See Literacy Plans) . How do weather patterns in our locality compare to weather in contrasting localities (in the southern hemisphere). Locate Bangladesh on world map and recognise its location in relation to the equator Use the internet and information books to find out about climate and seasonal weather patterns in Bangladesh (linked to locality study). Find out about monsoons.

Geography Learning Journey – Bangladesh Year 2 – Summer Term 2015 Where in the world is Bangladesh? What are some of the main geographical features of Bangladesh? How does the weather/climate in Bangladesh compare to the UK? Look at globes and world maps. Identify Bangladesh in relation to the UK. Locate the capital city (Dhaka). Look at a detailed map of Bangladesh showing physical features. Identify rivers, mountains and cities. Look at data for average rainfall and temperatures in Bangladesh and compare to the UK. Use the internet and reference books to find out about monsoons. What information should we include in a whole class information book about Bangladesh? What is life like for a child living in Bangladesh? How does everyday life compare to our lives in the UK? Choose key headings e.g. food, school, weather. Work in groups to create a page for a whole class book using the internet and reference books for information. Illustrate and include photographs. Read big book “A Day with Musa”. Look at photographs and discuss Musa’s life in comparison to our own.
