Hydrates Hydrates are compounds that have water added into the formula The water is part of the compound, not dissolving it Naming: A prefix indicating the number of water molecules and –hydrate is added to the name

Hydrate example Copper (II) sulfate exists as a hydrate: Name: copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate Write formula:

Naming Binary Covalent Compounds Name of a covalent compound indicates the number of atoms Name first element If there is more than one atom, use prefix to indicate the number Use a prefix for the second element, then the root name, then the suffix -ide
