PERCENT OF WATER IN COPPER II SULFATE PENTAHYDRATE

Header Chemistry Name________________ Experiment #8 Section_____Date_____ Percent of Water in Copper II Name(s) of Lab Partner(s) Sulfate Pentahydrate

Objective To calculate the percent of water in a hydrate

Lab Safety

Procedure Mass a dry watch glass Add a small scoop of blue hydrate Mass the watch glass and hydrate Heat the hydrate on hot plate until all blue is gone Remove watch glass from hot plate, turn off hot plate Allow watch glass to cool Mass the watch glass and anhydrate Carefully add a few drops of water to the watch glass and observe. Clean up.

Data Mass of watch glass ______ Mass watch glass and hydrate ______ Mass watch glass and anhydrate ______

Observations Before heating- (skip 3 lines) During heating- (skip 3 lines) After adding water- (skip 3 lines)

Calculations Percent of water in CuSO4 · 5 H2O 1. Amount of hydrate = __________ 2. Amount of anhydrate = _________ 3. Amount of water = _________ 4. Mass of CuSO4 · 5 H2O 5. Percent water = mass of water / mass of CuSO4 · 5 H2O

Calculations Actual percent of water in CuSO4 · 5 H2O Percent water in your experiment Percent error Percent error = % actual–% experimental X 100 = % actual %

Conclusion The mass percent of water in copper sulfate pentahydrate is _____________. The actual percent is ________. My percent error is __________. Two sources of error include __________.
