A “Community of Communities” Administrators Users User Commitees SSURF Facility Management Government Affairs Communications

A Community of Facilities nuclear and particle physics astronomical research neutron nanoscale science materials supercomputers light source biological/environmental laser and fusion

Why SSURF? Education on behalf of the community as a whole. Showcase user science to elected officials and the public. Third-party validator of user science. Coordination among facilities for benchmarking, best practices, and operational improvement. Coordination with university and industrial users.

SSURF Incorporation Expand potential scope of activities. Look to other funding sources (foundations & corporations). Hire staff.

Mission “Purpose. (…)advancing the science performed at user research facilities by (1) supporting their professional communities and research networks through the sharing of best practices and facilitation of professional development, and (2) promoting public awareness about the benefits and significance of the facilities and their research.”
