Authoritarian Governments

There are two types of governments: Types of Government are based on one question: Who governs and what is the citizen participation? There are two types of governments: Democracy Authoritarian

Authoritarianism/ Autocracy This is a government in which one person or a group of people holds absolute power. Power is gained through military force or inherited. Takes several forms

#1 Absolute Monarch Has a king, queen, emperor, empress Gain power through inheritance Have absolute power to rule as they see fit. Most governments were absolute monarchs until 1600s.

#2 Theocracy Government of a state by immediate divine guidance or by officials who are regarded as divinely guided Follow strict set of laws set by religion Leaders usually part of a clergy Occurred in early civilizations Pope Francis, King Tut/ Pharo, Hassan Rouhani Iran

#3 Oligarchy Rule of the few, usually the rich, powerful, and privileged Usually called aristocrats, oligarchs or nobles Was not a common form of government Occurred mostly in Ancient Greece

#4 Dictatorship A form of government were one person has absolute power. Use force or fraud to gain political control Use intimidation, terror, and suppression of civil liberties Mass propaganda

#5 Totalitarianism a state that regulates nearly every aspect of public and private behavior of the people. Usually related with dictatorships Deals with the scope of which government regulates peoples lives.
