8/17/16 Lesson 1-2: The Land

Landform Regions A landform region is a region that has similar landforms throughout. Examples of landforms are: Plains Mountains Hills Plateaus Landform regions are unique because of the SHAPE of its landform and the way it came to be.

Landform Regions*Continue* Why are studying landform regions important? Answer: Dividing the country into landform regions makes it easier for comparing and contrasting the different part of the country. Climate- the kind of weather a place has over a long period of time

The coastal plain What is the Coastal Plain? Answer: flat, low land along the Atlantic Ocean What is the difference between the Coastal Plain in Massachusetts and in Florida? Answer: The Coastal Plain is wider in Florida.

THE APPALACHIANS They run from the southeastern Canada to Alabama. The hilly region to the east of these mountains is called the Piedmont. Piedmont’s meaning “foothills”, and it is found at the bottom of the Appalachians Mountains What is a mountain chain? Answer: group of connected mountains What is erosion? Answer: the gradual wearing away of Earth’s Surface

The interior plains They stretch across the middle of the country, from the Appalachians in the east to the Rocky Mountains to the west. The eastern part of the Interior Plains is often called “The Central Plains.” This land is mostly flat or rolling. The Central Plains are surrounded by prairies or areas of flat or rolling lands. The western part of the Interior Plains is called “Great Plains.” The Great Plains stretch from southern Texas into Canada. The land in the Great Plains are much flatter than the Central Plains.

The ROCKY MOUNTAINS AND BEYOND The Rockies cover much of the western part of the United States. They Rockies are the country’s largest, longest, and youngest mountain range in the United States. They stretch from Mexico to Canada. Between the Rocky Mountains and other mountains, you will locate the Great Basin. The Great Basin includes Nevada and parts of five neighboring states. At the edge, or bottom, of the Great Basin you will locate Death Valley, California. Death Valley is the lowest point of the United States.

More mountains and valleys Sierra Nevada- means “snowy winter” in Spanish The first Europeans in this part of the country were from Spain and Mexico. The Pacific Coast of the United States is rocky and has little flat land. Lesson 1-2 Summary Activity: Make Flash Cards- Use notecards to make flash cards. On one side of each card, write the name of the landform region . On the other side, write a description of the region.
