NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN ENGINEERING

Definition: The new technologies we will consider in the following slides will involve new methods to make our life more convenient, such methods as: Telematics Blended Wing Bodies Bionics

Telematics Telematics is a general term that refers to any device which merges telecommunications and infomatics. Telematics includes anything from GPS systems to navigation systems. It is responsible for many features in vehicles from OnStar to hands free mobile calling. An example of telematics is the system that monitors your movements and habits of when you are driving in your car. Advantages include that it should reduce vehicle theft. Disadvantages include people may feel intrusion on their lives. The future of telematics may lie in driverless car systems that rely on GPS as a large part of their controlling systems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMRlArhNPzw

Blended Wing Bodies

Blended Wing Bodies What we mean by this is basically an aircraft that visually appears as a flying wing in effect, much like he stealth bomber design. Advantages include increased efficiency, allows for the potential of greater aircraft speeds and less drag is created. Disadvantages involve design complications. The future of these type of aircraft may lie in more efficient airliners that could ultimately carry out longer duration and distance flights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh_O4_PXe0E

Bionics Bionics is the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology. Examples of bionics used today are artificial limbs like the ones used by Paralympic Athletes, Prosthetics Hands and artificial eye parts. The future for Bionics may lie in many more parts of the body being able to be replaced by Bionics if the need arises. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKMxShL0oN8
