Basic Information Last major effort by the Native Americans of south New England to drive out the English colonists This resulted from tension following the collapse of trade partnerships and aggressive expansion

Chief Metacomet The English called him King Philip He was the second son of Massasoit He was the chief of the Wampanoag

Population By this time, the New England immigrants from Europe totaled about 80,000 people in 110 towns The Native population was down to about 10,000

The Nipmucks, Pocumtucks, and Narragansett tribes joined with the Wampanoag tribe This battle lasted 14 months and destroyed 12 frontier towns

Events that led up to War They had become dependent on English goods, food, and weapons Bargaining power diminished as the fur trade dried up King Philip and other Native Americans were forced to recognize English sovereignty

The War Started when some Natives killed an Englishmen’s cattle The farmer retaliated by killing several Native Americans This led to a series of battles

War ended when King Philip was captured and beheaded In the end, Natives destroyed 12 English towns

Aftermath Over 600 colonists were killed Around 3,000 Native Americans were killed and many others were enslaved Per capita, it was probably the deadliest war ever in America

Do you think that Metacomet did the right thing by attacking the Colonists?
