LANDSCAPING

1. FOUNDATION PLANTING- plants that cover foundation of building and blend it with the ground

2. BORDER PLANTING- plants along the edge or border

3. SCREEN PLANTING- plants that prevent viewing of unsightly scenes

4. SPECIMEN PLANT- individual plants planted for beauty or accent

5. FACING- small plants used to hide the leggy portions of taller background plants

6. GROUND COVER- spreading plants such as ivy used to cover the ground completely

7. BACKGROUND FOR HOUSE- shade trees planted to frame house and sky

8. HEDGE- plants planted close enough to look like one unit

9. ESPALIER- training a plant against a wall in a pattern

10. TOPIARY- trimming or training plants in unnatural shapes

11. PLANT BOX- box specially planned for growing ornamental plants or flowers

12. TRUE PATIO- enclosed garden or an outdoor living room attached to the house and enclosed on all sides

13. FLAG STONE- use of natural flat stones in paving

14. TURN COURT- an area for vehicles to turn around on

15. PARKING COURT- an area for parking vehicles, may be part of the turn area

16. HOBBY PLANTS- plants that an owner collects and maintains on his property- camellias, foliage plants, etc.

17. HARDY PLANT- one that will survive the climate in a given area

18. TENDER PLANT- one that may be killed by a severe winter in a given area

19. BEDDING PLANTS- generally, annual plants that are planted for mass effect and color such as marigolds or pansies

20. THREE AREAS AROUND THE HOME TO CONSIDER IN LANDSCAPING

1. Public area - the front of the house and yard that the public sees in passing

2. Private area - the part of the yard that only guests usually see - should be especially pretty

3. Service area - the unsightly part of the yard that should be kept hidden or screened, such as dog pens, wood piles, or sheds

21. Plot Plan - shows existing features, buildings, and plants to be left in place

22. SCALE DRAWING – the finished drawing of a house and yard that a landscape contractor presents to the home owner which shows all the plants that the contractor proposes to plant in the yard. It is drawn to scale, which means that size relationships on paper are the same as in the real yard. (next page)

25. BALL AND BURLAP – a common method of selling shrubs where the plant is dug up with a ball of dirt containing the roots. The ball is covered with burlap material for transporting

29. LANDSCAPE STRUCTURES – parts of the landscape other than plants, such as; walks, walls, terraces, gazeboes, driveways, patios, arbors, pathways. These usually have to be constructed

30. PRUNING – cutting out dead, diseased, or unwanted limbs and foliage to improve appearance or health of landscape plants

31. ARBOR – A curved overhead lattice that takes the appearance of a doorway

33. BALANCE AND SCALE- using equal amounts or attracting equal attention to two sides of a view line
