The Five Story Elements

Understand that all good stories contain 5 important elements. I CAN… Understand that all good stories contain 5 important elements. CCSS I Can Statement

A story has five basic but important elements A story has five basic but important elements. These five components are: the characters, the setting, the plot, the conflict, and the theme. Literary Lesson

These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow. Literary Lesson

characters: Who was involved? plot: What happened? characters: Who was involved? conflict: What are the characters struggling with in the story? theme: What lesson did you learn? setting: Where did it take place? MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212

plot: What happened? The plot is the actual STORY around which the entire book is based. A plot should have a very clear beginning, middle, and end so that the reader can make sense of the action and follow along from start to finish. MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212

characters: Who was involved? The characters are the INDIVIDUALS that the story is about. Every story should have a main character. The story centers upon the main character who determines the way the plot will develop. However, the other characters are also very important because they supply additional details, explanations, or actions which contribute to the story. MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212

conflict: What are the characters struggling with in the story? Every story has a conflict to solve. The plot is centered on this conflict and the ways in which the characters attempt to resolve the PROBLEM. When the story’s action becomes most exciting, right before the resolution, it is called the climax. MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212

theme: What lesson did you learn? Theme is an underlying MESSAGE, LESSON, or the BIG IDEA of a story. Many stories have more than one theme. To figure out the theme of a story, ask yourself these questions: How did the characters react to obstacles in the story? What important decisions did the characters make? How did the characters grow and change throughout the story? What did the characters learn in the story? “Friendship” MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212

setting: Where did it take place? MOVIE: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212 The setting is the TIME and PLACE of the story. The author describes the environment or surroundings of the story in such detail that the reader feels that he or she can picture the scene.

YOU CAN LOG OFF AS SOON AS THE MOVIE OPENS ON YOUR SCREEN. MOVIE TIME! Here’s a video recap of the FIVE ELEMENTS! https://safeshare.tv/x/ss58451a7360212 YOU CAN LOG OFF AS SOON AS THE MOVIE OPENS ON YOUR SCREEN. EXCELLENT WORK TODAY!
