Answering long questions Explaining questions momentum.docx

An explaining question A children’s playground contains various equipment including swings, a slide and a climbing frame. The playground has been fitted with a rubber safety surface. The rubber tiles rest on a concrete base. Sometimes children fall from the playground equipment. The rubber tiles provide a safer surface for the children to land on than landing directly onto the concrete base. Explain why… [6]

Explain Make something clear State the reasons for something happening The answer SHOULD NOT be a simple list of reasons. Points in the answer must be linked coherently and logically Suitable linking words could be ‘so’, ‘therefore’, ‘because’, ‘due to’, ‘since’, ‘this means’, or ‘meaning that’. All of the stages/steps in an explanation must be included to get full marks.

How can we practice? What part of physics is the question asking about (this may be eluded to in other parts of the same question) What are the KEY facts involved in that area of physics? What are the equations, can they help explain what is happening? What does my life-experience tell me?

In pairs Looking at the question write down all the facts together that you think are important to included in the answer (HINT: we’ve been talking about momentum…) You have 3 minutes

In fours Compare your lists. Discuss the points you have made and together come up with the 6 points you think will answer all that the question needs.

As a class Let’s collect those points together

On your own (in silence!) Write your answer to the question making sure it is logical and includes all the correct vocabulary. Your answer needs to flow and be easily understood.
