Surface Decoration for Ceramics

Glaze A suspension of minerals Creates many different colors May be glossy or matte surface Transparent or opaque Must be stirred every time Never glaze a foot or bottom Use a wet sponge to remove excess glaze Check for no lead label if using for table ware

Engobes Slip with a color and flux additive Traditional colors come from oxides May be applied to leatherhard, greenware or bisque fired clay Adds contrast, texture, pattern

Mishima technique Comes from Korea Engobes or slip fill in etched out areas and then scratched off to reveal design

Scraffito Means to scratch through, Itallian Engobes or slip are painted on and then a tool is used to scratch through to reveal clay
