ONE CYCLE: DWELL: THE RISE: A CAM has two parts, the FOLLOWER and the CAM PROFILE. KEY PHRASES ONE CYCLE: One rotation/revolution of the cam. DWELL: When cam rotates but the follower does not rise or fall. THE RISE: That part of the cam that causes the follower to rise. What do you think is the 'FALL' ?
Types of Profiles – Put into notes 1. PEAR SHAPED CAM - Used on shafts of cars. 2. DROP CAM. As the drop cam rotates the follower stays level for a short time. It then rises slowly and suddenly drops.
3. ECCENTRIC CAM. The follower moves up and down in a vertical direction. Its movement is very smooth. These cams are used in steam engines. 4. SWASH CAM. This cam is like a ‘spinning top’. As the angled disc rotates the follower rises and falls, following the movement of the disc.
ANSWERS 5. BOX CAM. As the disc (cam) rotates, the follower - follows a groove cut into the disc. 6. FLAT PLATE CAM. The follower rises and falls according the movement of the cam profile , as it travels from left to right.
