DESIGN OF STEERING SYSTEM OF SELU MINI BAJA CAR Benjamin Genre Advisor: Dr. Ho-Hoon Lee
Design Goal To create a C-Program capable of determining the steering error of a Mini Baja car. Mini Baja Car
Importance of Steering Design Plays important role in car’s maneuverability. Reduces skidding and wear of tires.
Resources of Design Paper already previously written by Alfred Showers, Ho-Hoon Lee, and Cris Koutsougeras. Determined use of commercially available rack and pinion system and steering knuckle assembly. Use of Ackermann principle of steering design. Computation of steering error. Rack and Pinion steering system
Rack and Pinion Composed of two gears. Use of rotational motion to create linear motion. Most common type of system. Rack and Pinion steering system
Ackermann Steering Principle States the geometric arrangement of all the axial lines in the steering of a car should meet at a point.
Steering Error Steering error will be inevitable. Goal is to minimize error by finding ideal distance from the front axle to the steering rack axis.
Creating a Steering Error Program Frame dimensions not yet determined. Use of program such as Visual Studios. User will only have to input the specific parameters of a vehicle to be give the steering error. Will help in determining best commercially available steering system to be used.
Deliverables Dates Deliverables February 24th-March 10th Study research paper and begin outlining program March 11th – March 31st Begin writing program. April 1st-April 14st Test program with frame design teams current design and measurements April 15nd – April 23th Research possible steering assemblies and estimate cost. April 23rd – May 3rd -Finalize program and calculate optimal distance from the front axle to the steering rack axis for both frame designs. -Determine the best commercially available steering systems to be used.
