Welcome to Steel Products Manufacturing, the last semester of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel Certificate course.  This semester is unique in that it is comprised of a variety of subjects and instructors with one common theme the metallurgy of finishing processes.  The instructors, drawn from industry, have many years of extensive experience.

Steel Products Manufacturing Metallurgy of final product Many subjects but with a common theme Practical aspects of making steel useful for the customer Presented by a group of people from the industry who share their knowledge & experience In this semester your will learn the metallurgy of the final product and builds on your knowledge of metallurgy from the previous semesters It is comprised of many subjects that in themselves could encompass a twelve week course. The intent is to give you a good introduction to each subject and it is hoped that if you are interested you can gain a more in-depth knowledge on you own. Up to now your knowledge of steel manufacturing is mostly limited to iron and steel making. Steel products manufacturing will introduce you to the next steps in the process of making steel useful for the customer. Each instructor, being part of the industry, can not only share their knowledge but also their extensive experience.

600-853 Steel Products Manufacturing Typical Schedule SESSION TOPIC 01 Introduction: Customer View 02 Alloying 03 Special Steels 04 Flat Rolled Products I 05 Flat Rolled Products II 06 Rod, Bar and Wire 07 Galvanizing 08 Tin Plating 09 Product Design 10 Welding and Joining 11 Making Steel Useful 12 Surface Defects Customer View looks at the customer’s design process and the current state of the industry. In the modern world we are all steel customers. Alloying and Special Steels show the effects of different alloys on the final properties and particularly chromium in the application of stainless steels. Flat Roll Products along with Rod, Bar and Wire take the steelmaking slab or billet to fully of semi processed steel state. Galvanizing and Tin Plating describe the processes to coat steel to make it more durable. Product Design looks at the aspects of designing steel products and processes to serve customer requirements. Welding and Joining focuses on welding and other fastening processes and their effects on steels. Making Steel Useful describes how steel is made useful by manufacturers . Surface Defects introduces steel surface defects on both flat roll and long products. Note: This schedule is the sequence that the subjects are normally presented but can be amended to accommodate instructor availability.
