Objectives of Session 7 Define stakeholders and stakeholder analysis Discuss how to conduct stakeholder analysis Practice stakeholder analysis

Who is a Stakeholder? Individuals, groups and organizations which can influence and have an interest in the organization and its work Influence varies with level of interest in the organization and degree of power

Types of Stakeholders Stakeholders are categorized into three: Primary - those directly affected Secondary - those indirectly affected Key - those who act as change agents

Definition of Stakeholder Analysis Management of relationships between an organization and those who have an interest in and influence on the organization and its work Analysis helps to understand the interests of stakeholders better Illustrates the nature and scope of their influence and interest

Definition of Stakeholder Analysis (cont’d) Helps to identify current and potential deviation from their expectations and their likely reaction to organization’s work Helps to identify which stakeholders to involve and partner with Identifies sources of information for external and internal environmental analysis

Internal or External Stakeholder? Traditionally, stakeholder analysis focused on those outside the organization Innovation systems paradigm includes those inside the organization - staff of various grades

Internal or External Stakeholder? (Cont’d) Distinction between outsiders and those inside the organization is also getting somewhat blurred as “outsiders” are necessary parts of the innovation system The objective and vision should determine who is a stakeholder

Questions to Guide Stakeholder Analysis Who are the organization’s stakeholders? How important are they to the organization? What do they want from the organization?

Questions to Guide Stakeholder Analysis (cont’d) What criteria do they use to evaluate the organization? How does the organization perform against these criteria? How can the organization make its stakeholders effective allies?

Which Levels of Planning for Stakeholder Analysis? Stakeholder analysis can be used at all three levels of planning: Strategic, Tactical and Operational Differences only with respect to management levels and planning time horizons The vertical and horizontal logic holds equally at all three levels
