Warm Up What is the definition of a caregiver? Give three examples of caregivers in your life

Caregivers- those who look after children

Historical perspectives W.U. List one way that childhood has changed in the past 100 years? How might childhood differ in America, compared to another country?

How has childhood changed? Health- Love- Health- better health care for disease, more childhood obesity due to high fat diet and less activity Love- Children still need love. Old saying “child should be seen and not heard”, now children have more of a say in their lives

Education-Write two things that you think have changed in education over the last hundred years. In 1852, Massachusetts passed the first compulsory education law All children 8-14 1922 Compulsory School Act approved for all states.

Work List your work experience (could be watching brothers and sisters, cleaning the house anything) How have the jobs you have had changed who you are? What is the main “job” of children today? How might that differ from the past?

Work: Today In the past Federal labor law Compulsory education in CO School is the main job of children Federal labor law 14 is the minimum work age 15 and under cannot work between the hours of 7am and 7pm during school week/ year Compulsory education in CO Required 6-17years In the past 9 or over should be part of family income Children were considered property for many 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act Learn, go to school

Other differences… Play- More leisure time, more toys Dress- less formal than in the past

Families Mothers begin to enter work force In the past 1940 -1960 Nuclear family- father, mother, children 1940 -1960 Mothers begin to enter work force Single parent families are becoming more common. Orphanages not seen as much (group homes), Today More foster care, adoptions Grandparents raising their grandchildren. Teen parenting In the beginning, there was the nuclear family-the father financially supporting the family and the mother (have to be married) looking after their children and their home. Between 1940 and 1960, the number of homes with mothers and fathers both working increased significantly. The economic benefits of being employed, combined with escalating divorce rates and an increase in never-married mothers, led to a greater need for child care. Gay and lesbian families are becoming more acceptable in today’s society. Even people who are unable to have children themselves, adoption or fostering is more available due to the decline in orphanages and is looked at as another family structure in society. But the latest trend is, grandparents raising their grandchildren. With mothers becoming even younger, we are seeing the burden of raising the children fall upon the older generation. WWII 1939-1945

Discipline Corporal Punishment not uncommon Now more child centered Has more freedom & self esteem building caused children to be self centered?
