U.S. Government Printing Office FDsys Update Fall Depository Library Council October 15, 2007

Program Office Updates In July, the CTO organization, including the FDsys program office was combined with the CIO organization. New CIO group Former CTO group Former CIO group Technology Management Program Management Security Project Management IT Operations Strategic Programs like FDsys are now tightly aligned with IT Infrastructure and Operations.

GPO Strategic System Initiatives Business Information Systems Content Management Systems Digital Production Systems (Financial, HR) (FDsys, Composition System, ILS) (Manufacturing Systems, Print on Demand) IT Infrastructure and Operations The CIO Organization is well positioned to support GPO’s Strategic System Initiatives.

Release 1C Development Update 1C is the first public release of FDsys Builds on the foundation established for 1B Foundational elements include software acquisitions decisions, adherence to the OAIS reference model, basic content submission, packaging content and metadata together, content search and delivery, and more. GPO and Harris Corporation have been working carefully to plan the sequence of 1C releases. In fact, we are holding an key development event, the 1C System Requirements Review and System Design Reviews this week. These Reviews ensure that GPO and the Harris design and developments share a complete and common understanding of the work to be done over the coming months.

Release 1C Development Update Will be rolled out in stages, or “increments” Each increment will introduce additional system functionality

Release 1C Development Update Release 1.C planning milestones accomplished System Requirements Review (SRR) Initial requirements document – RD 3.1 System Design Review (SDR) Feature sets approach Requirements fine tuning The first requirement baseline was established last winter at the System Requirements Review. These reviews involve Harris personnel, GPOM business unit people, and our Program Management Office and IT staff. One outcome was that RD 3.1, the initial requirements document was published. In May, we held the System Design Review, which is focused on the overall system architecture, and understand a design that meets the requirements. Later this spring the team agreed to follow a feature sets approach to development, and the R1C requirements were allocated to one of several feature sets. In late summer and really fall, Requirements Working groups met intensively to fine tune the requirements and to ensure that the development team knew exactly what GPO and our users wanted the system to do.

Release 1C Development Update Future 1.C planning milestones Delta SRR Baseline for requirements – RD 3.2 Delta SDR Baseline for system architecture The development process used by Harris and GPO for FDsys requires reviews at various project milestones. The Delta System Requirements Review, or Delta SRR, will ensure there is complete understanding of the changes (or deltas in engineering-speak) which have occurred since the first SRR last winter. One outcome of the Delta SRR is to establish the baseline for R1C requirements. These will be documented in Requirements Document 3.2, and any changes to the baseline will be carefully managed. Once the requirements are nailed down, the next step is the Delta System Design Review or SDR. Again this is an opportunity to validate changes that have occurred based on new learning since the initial SDR back in May. One outcome of the SDR will be to finalize the baseline for system architecture.

Release 1C Development Update So cut to the chase! What’s in the feature sets? What is the schedule?

Release 1C Development Update What’s in the feature sets? Infrastructure Package management/OAIS GPO Access replacement Metadata management (ILS)

Release 1C Development Update What else? Congressional content submission Persistent name Agency content submission Access and delivery

Release 1C Development Update First public release – late 2008 Additional releases – 2009 R1.B demo system will remain available The next release is targeted for late 2008. Additional releases will occur in 2009 adding incremental functionality. The R1B demo system is expected to be used throughout the development of the next release to gather comments and feedback

Release 1.B Proof of concept demonstration Content submission Access
