Tuesday DLT: Wildcats will annotate for abstract and concrete details in "Identity” with a partner

FYI: Remember that there is a jousting task due by October 6 for individual level up points (200). Located on my website under the ACA tab -- phillipsenglishi.weebly.com If you have not purchased Monster, make sure you take care of this by Friday.

Relevant Application: Identity A relevant application is sometimes an opportunity for you to practice a skill or process in collaboration with other students. Working together allows you to talk about your learning, defend your ideas, and gain a deeper understanding about the skills you’re building as a reader or writer. Today you’ll complete the Identity RA by following the directions given by your teacher!

Relevant Application: Identity Steps to follow READ the poem once to understand the main idea HIGHLIGHT L1 (concrete) details in yellow DRAW arrows from L1 words to the side of your paper and… WRITE L2 (abstract) words that you think of when you read the poem EX: “Two roads diverged” Choice, decision, dilemma

Closure: Independent Journal What choice, either stated or implied, has the speaker of Identity made? Find text evidence to prove your claim. Write on the back of your poem then turn your work in to your teacher.

20 September 2017 WARM UP What concrete details do you notice in this image? What abstract idea do those details suggest?

FYI: Be sure you picked up a copy of the theme word list and tape it in your RWN.

Wednesday DLT: Wildcats will analyze videos to uncover the theme and create a thematic statements

20 September 2017 WARM UP What concrete details do you notice in this image? What abstract idea do those details suggest?

Review from yesterday – “Identity” What were some key L2 words that came up when you looked at your L2? Make sure you write these in provided box. What does the weed represent? What do the flowers represent? What is it that gives the weed its freedom? Write the main idea of the poem. One sentence… What is the main thing going on. In the poem?

Notes: Thematic Statement” Theme: A theme is an idea or concept that is repeated throughout the text that helps the reader understand the message of the story NOT the moral of the story Constant/recurring from beginning to end One word, or a few words EX: Faith, Loss of innocence, Facing reality, Motherhood, Oppression A thematic statement is a universal statement that is presented in or suggested by the text. Your theme or L2 word helps in writing this statement One complete sentence Does not mention “you” or any character names Arguable EX: Hardships and negative experiences in life can make a person become stronger

How do we get from the thematic idea to a thematic statement? Consider the movie Finding Nemo Loss Insecurity The need for independence Overprotectiveness Rebelliousness Overcoming obstacles OVERPROTECTIVENESS – WHAT IS THE WRITER OF FINDING NEMO TRYING TO TELL US ABOUT OVERPROTECTIVENESS? START YOUR SENTENCE WITH “OVERPROTECTIVENESS”

Overprotectiveness creates rebelliousness in those who are victims of such a restricted environment.

Your turn: Consider the movie Finding Nemo Loss Insecurity The need for independence Overprotectiveness Rebelliousness Overcoming obstacles OVERCOMING OBSTACLES – WHAT IS THE WRITER OF FINDING NEMO TRYING TO TELL US ABOUT THE OVERCOMING OBSTACLES? START YOUR SENTENCE WITH “OVERCOMING OBSTACLES”

Possible verbs Creates Causes Builds Results in Forces

Main idea In one concise sentence state the key idea of what literally happens. Work with a partner to develop a sentence stating the main idea in the movie Finding Nemo.

Finding Nemo An father’s overprotectiveness causes his son to rebel leading both father and son into separate obstacle filled journeys which ultimately result in a deeper understanding of each other.

Let’s practice: Put this on a separate sheet of paper that you will be turning in. “The Road Not Taken” Thematic ideas? Thematic Statement? Main idea “Identity” Thematic statement? Main idea? Turn in --

Thematic Statements Copy into notes: Friday Thematic Statements Copy into notes: Road: Choices have to be made even though one may not foresee the outcome. Uncertainty can lead to indecisiveness, yet one still must make choices. The path one takes in life will include many twists and turns, the outcomes of which may not be immediately known. Identity: Being true to oneself is more important than conforming to the expectations of others. Struggle and hardship are small prices to pay for freedom. Though it can be tempting to follow the crowd, individuality makes one free to live a richer life.

Exit ticket Which is which? These are about “The Road Not Taken”. 1. Choices 2. A man contemplates which path to take in the woods and deals with the consequences of the choice he makes. 3.
