Magnetic Force Magnetic force is a push or pull exerted by a magnet. A magnet has 2 poles: North and South One pole cannot exist without the other Each pole exerts a magnetic force. Whether the magnetic force is a push or pull depends on what object the magnet is affecting and whether the poles are alike or different. If the poles are alike, they repel. If the poles are different, they attract.

Magnetic Field The area surrounding a magnet in which the magnetic force exists is a magnetic field.

Electricity and magnetism The production of a magnetic field by electric current is called electromagnetism. A magnet that is made by passing an electric current through wire wrapped around an iron core is called an electromagnet.

Producing electricity Magnetism can be used to produce an electric current. An electric generator transforms magnetism into electrical energy.

I can determine the relationship among the mass of objects, the distance between these objects, and the amount of gravitational attraction. The Law of universal gravitation Gravity is an attractive force that pulls objects toward each other. The law of universal gravitation states that the force of gravity acts between all objects in the universe. Gravity is the force that keeps you grounded on Earth and prevents you from floating into space. The gravitational force between 2 objects depends on 2 factors: mass and distance.

The Law of universal gravitation Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The more mass an object has, the more gravitational attraction it exerts on other objects. As the distance between objects increase, the force of gravity decreases. Likewise, as the distance decreases, the force of gravity increases.

Gravity and orbits Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion, unless an unbalanced force acts on the object. Inertia is an object’s tendency to resist a change in motion. The more mass an object has, the greater its inertia.

Weight versus mass Weight and mass are not the same. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on an object. Weight is measured in newtons.
