A stem-and-leaf plot can help you compare data. Stem-and-Leaf Plots A stem-and-leaf plot can help you compare data.

Learning Goals To insert data into a stem and leaf plot To be able to read and interpret data from a stem and leaf plot

Minds On... What is the highest temperature in Mexico? (degrees Celsius) * How many data points are listed? * How many temperatures are above 28 degrees? * What strategies did you use to answer these questions? * How could you organize this data to make it easier to answer these questions? 33, 33, 25, 27, 28, 29, 29, 31, 19, 31, 32, 22, 29, 18

Stem and Leaf Plot Stem-and-Leaf Plot: a display where the data is organized by place value, very useful if you need to find the mean, median, or mode of the data set.

Range The difference between the lowest and highest values. In {4, 6, 9, 3, 7} the lowest value is 3, and the highest is 9, so the range is 9 − 3 = 6. Range can also mean all the output values of a function.

The heights of 11 middle school badminton players are (in inches): 56 61 60 59 57 58 63 61 59

You can organize this data in a stem-and-leaf plot!

First, order your data from least to greatest. 56 57 58 59 60 61 63

Then, put your data in a stem-and-leaf plot.

The ordered numbers are: 56, 57, 58, 58, 59, 59, 60, 61, 61, 61, 63 Each STEM stands for the first digit of each number. Record the tens digits in order from least to greatest. HEIGHT IN INCHES Stem Leaves 5 6 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9 0, 1, 1, 1, 3

The ordered numbers are: 56, 57, 58, 58, 59, 59, 60, 61, 61, 61, 63 Each LEAF stands for the second digit of each number. Record the ones digits in order from least to greatest. HEIGHT IN INCHES Stem Leaves 5 6 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9 0, 1, 1, 1, 3

You can use a stem-and-leaf plot to find the median and the mode.

HEIGHT IN INCHES Stem Leaves 5 6 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9 0, 1, 1, 1, 3 MEDIAN Find the middle number in a set of numbers. The median is 59 inches. MODE Find the number that occurs most often in a set of numbers. The mode is 61 inches.

Now, let’s try one on our own!

Here are the scores of volleyball games in a stem-and-leaf plot!

Volleyball Scores for Our Team Stem Leaves 5, 6, 7, 9 1 3, 5, 5, 5, 6

How many volleyball games were played? Stem Leaves 5, 6, 7, 9 1 3, 5, 5, 5, 6
