Skill Acquisition Definition: The process of learning/acquiring new skills

Definition of a Skill Something that we LEARN Predetermined (this means that we have thought of it before) Goal directed (there is a reason for doing it)

Skill ‘Skill is the learned ability to bring about predetermined results with maximum certainty, often with the minimum outlay of time or energy or both.’ Knapp

Describing a Skilful Performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_4aMkk9CTY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtehjHUO0e0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQT3jTG3Oyw

Describing a Skilful Performance Remember: ACE FACE Aesthetically pleasing (good to look at) Controlled Effortless (makes it look easy) Fluent Accurate Consistent/co-ordinated Efficient (doesn’t waste time or energy)

Types of Skill Cognitive Motor Perceptual Psychomotor Skills that involve thought processes Skills that involve a physical movement Skills that involve the detection and interpretation of stimuli from the environment Combination of perceptual and motor skills Planning a shot in snooker (working out tactics/scores) High jump, badminton serve Rugby, analyse location of teammates and opposition before deciding what skill to do. Analysing the stimuli from the environment, decide on the best option (pass or run) and then execute it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V9jkIYBJxM Watch the video and identify what types of skill are involved. Is it just one or a combination?

Perceptual Skill Look at this picture – what do you see? We use out perceptual mechanism to give this picture meaning Sometimes we interpret things differently

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu4h5qcu8yI&feature=related This goal keeper’s perceptual skills were poor in this situation – he misjudged the ball and as a result he mistimed his clearance.

When would you use your perceptual skills? Cricket: Batting – judging the flight (spin, speed, height, direction) of the ball as it’s being bowled Batting – looking at the position of the ball and judging if it’s far enough away for there to be time to run between the posts Batting – judging the position of the fielders Fielding – judging the height/direction of the ball as it’s in the air, speed as it rolls along the ground having been hit

Exam question What are the characteristics of a skilled performance? (3 marks)
