What is the author selling? What is the author trying to tell the reader? What could the author be motivated by? Informing the public Getting paid Changing people mind What does the author have to gain with their writing?

Getting paid In what ways could the author profit from the writing or video? Financial gains from their work Increase is professional status Move to a job that pays more The article is linked to their profession

What Claims are being made? Are the claims reliable? What evidence is being used Is the evidence supported by truth worthy and professional people? Can the evidence be backed by other sources? Can you check the evidence? Can the evidence be disputed?

Example Lindsay Lohan: Starlet Lusting over Vladimir Putin. Fading celebrity has plan for global domination Is this reliable? What question Do you have?

What does the author use to try to persuade the reader? Colorful strong wording? Strong examples and comparisons? Pictures and symbols? Does the examples and parallels make sense in the context?

Example Guy in store to store clerk: If you sell cigarettes you are killing people. Store Clerk: I am just doing my job, I don’t get to decide what people buy Guy in store: You know who else said they were doing their jobs, NAZIS! So you are just like Hitler!

What were some of the problems with the last example? What made it hard to believe or “buy” the guy in the stores point?

Life Examples Hillary Clinton used her power as Secretary of State to get people to donate money to her charity. Evidence: some of the important leaders of the word both gave money to her charity to aid people in third world countries and also met with her as sec. of state. What if this was taken from a website name:trumpforpresident.com What if this was taken from the New York Times? What if it was taken from www.nationalenquirer.com

What if you read this… “Donald Trump is a Jerk” How do you make your mind up about this? “Donald Trump does not care about the average American person” How you make up your mind about this? “Donald Trump eats puppy dogs” I bet someone said that they believe it because they don’t like him. Be careful not to believe things just because you agree with the idea

Write this down in bold and mark it EVERYONE IS SELLING SOMETHING Its your job to figure out what they are selling and then you decide what you are buying
