Engage Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27th January each year. It’s a time for everyone to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. On HMD we can honour the survivors of these regimes and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to inform our lives today. 27th January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Engage Some discussion ideas … Is it important to mark Holocaust Memorial Day – if yes, why? Why do you think people commit genocide? Activity suggestion … Look up the information about British heroes who cared, maybe do the “character map”- http://hmd.org.uk/sites/default/files/british_heroes_of_the_holocaust_resource.pdf Video suggestion … http://hmd.org.uk/resources/stories/hmd-2016-ivor-perl Background information … http://hmd.org.uk/content/for-educators
Respond Amen Jesus, you taught us that we must love our neighbours. Help us to learn about difficult events, such as the Holocaust, so that these things may never happen again. With hope and trust we pray. Amen
