Project Statement Technical evaluation of e-book development apps May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis Technical evaluation of e-book development apps Design e-textbook for Electric Circuits class. Primary Objectives: Interactive elements Videos, quizzes, slides Book must be clear, concise and accurate Elements should have proper justification

Design Approach Three phase project Research Design Testing Software Colors Format Design Testing Difference in appearance in computer vs iPad Survey students Client

Research Book Component

Format Criteria Design for How People Learn by Julie Dirksen May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis Design for How People Learn by Julie Dirksen Context: The framework and conditions Challenge: A stimulus to action within the context Activity: A physical response to the challenge Feedback: A reflection of the effectiveness of the learners action

Color Selection Red/yellow color range= promote brain activity Blue/green color range= relaxes the person Widgets Selected colors that increases contrast and readability Teal Yellow Font Selection of font based on contrast with respect to background color.

Design Software iBooks Author Pros Cons Display Latex equations May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis iBooks Author Pros Display Latex equations Easy formatting media files Interactive widgets Cons Designed to work only on Mac iOS Outputs only to iPad

May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis Implement research

May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis

Color Combinations

May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis Testing

Testing Product May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis Surveyed students in the ECpE Department (EE, CprE, SE) The students interacted with the iPad on their own and took a survey with questions such as their opinion on: Font Size of font Color on the different elements Equation display Pictures Which interactive feature they found useful?

Technical Challenges Software Consideration Difficulties: Solution: Design platform with minimal coding Solution: Sigil and iBook Author are the two best design software that we found. However iBook's Author is our best bet since it has a better user interface.

Technical Challenges Creating a consistent template for iBooks Author Difficulties: Landscape and portrait template will not change simultaneously with one another Position of elements will not fit every purpose Solution: Make modification on both landscape and portrait format Create a template Format the media placeholders so that they wont interfere with texts on the page

Technical Challenges Interactive way to present solution Difficulties iBook's Author does not allow us to embed solution for each problem No logic mechanism where we can restrict the user from accessing the next question Solution Embed a keynote presentation file into the book Omit the logic mechanism and use a step-by-step solution would be a better approach to guide the student through the problems

Technical Challenges Taking full advantage of widgets Difficulties Need access to different software. Need to excellent coding skill. Solution Use widgets that we need the most. Focus more on certain widgets.

E-Textbook Advantages May13-18 Client: Dr. Aliprantis E-Textbook Advantages Interactive features engage the brain more to enhance the learning experience. Supports video and audio Bookmark important pages or equations Carry dozens of e-textbooks on one reader Quick searches
