Innovative products for disseminating geographic information (part II) Geneve, September 2015 Jorge L. Vega Valle Sociodemographic Statistics Department INE Spain

1- Introduction 2- New geographical products 3- Algorithm of partitioning cells 4- Confidentiality 5- Conclusions

1- Introduction Importance of having geo-referenced information available Spain collected geographical coordinates first time in 2011

2- New geographical products Geographical thematic maps Users can directly select the area (cells of 100 km, 10 km or 1km each side) and the detailed map they want to analyze http://www.ine.es/censos2011/visor/

2- New geographical products 25 predefined 1km2 maps Only printed publication of the Census 25 maps about the most intersting topics Reflect information from an innovative point of view In big cities, these maps show better the reality

3- Algorithm of partitioning cells Situation 1 (<40 sampling units) No additional partition Situation 2 (40 <= sampling units <250) -Recursively half partitions that remain at least 20 simple units on both sides of the division *1 Vertical *2 Horizontal …

... ... ... ...

Situation 3 (sampling units>=250) -Divide 1km2 cell into 400 subcells of 50m x 50m -Calculate p: For example if sampling units=500, p=120 -Step 1: Draw as many vertical lines as possible that leave at least “p” sample units to the left and right side of each division.

Step 1 (sampling units=500, p=120)

Situation 3 (sampling units>=250) -Step 2: Draw as many horizontal lines as possible that leave at least “20” sample units to the top and bottom of each division.

Step 2

Situation 3 (sampling units>=250) -Step 3: Draw as many vertical lines as possible that leave at least “20” sample units to the left and right side of each division.

Step 3

Example of 1km2 cell 1.583 sampling units 21.945 people Maximum amount of cells: 1.583/20 = 79

Example: Finally 52 cells

4- Confidentiality -Same measures in all products -Information was disseminated when one of these two conditions was satisfied: * Sampling units / categories involved >= 5 (total dissemination) * 5 Sampling units or more in any breakdown (partial) -All data is rounded to the closest integer multiple of 5.

Example 1: Legal marital status (5 categories) 30 sampling units 14 single 10 married 4 widow 2 divorced 30/5=6 and 6>5, total information disseminated Example 2: Legal marital status (5 categories) 15 sampling units 6 single 5 married 3 widow 1 divorced 15/5=3 and 3<5, total information not disseminated. Only partial

5- Conclusions Increase in the amount of countries that plan to disseminate geographical information: -Possible to compare homogeneus units that have the same surface and do not change as time goes by -Interesting tool to analyse situation in borderlands -Eurostat. Plans for 2021
