Prevent Shoplifting – Reduce Shrinkage

Steps to Preventing Shoplifting Keep Your Store Organized and Products Well-Placed: Position the cash-wrap-also know as the check out area- in the front of the store, allowing visibility to the entrance and exit. Identify high shrink items and place them sensibly within your store, ideally demanding employee/customer engagement. Identify Common Shoplifting Methods and Traits: Shoplifters work in pairs or large groups, one will distract the sales staff Some shoplifter may grab items and run Spend more time watching cashier or sales clerk than actually shopping Takes several items into dressing room Seems nervous and pick up random items with no interest

Steps to Preventing Shoplifting 3. Leverage Coordinated Customer Service to Your Advantage: Have an employee be responsible to greet every person who enters the store, as well as make sure they make eye contact.

Steps to Preventing Shoplifting 4. Optimize Your Store’s Design and Layout for Theft Prevention: Position the cash-warp-also know as the check out area- in the front of the store, allowing visibility to the entrance and exit. Never leave your register unlocked or unattended Keep your fixtures and displays low for increased visibility Keep small or expensive items in locked cabinets Keep dressing rooms lock and limit number of items allowed in dressing room

Steps to Preventing Shoplifting 5. Internal Theft Prevention: Check employees in and out of your store everyday, checking their personal bags to help control potential loss. Manage: refunds, loyalty cards and coupons as if they were cash. Complete Background check on all employees' before hiring. 6. Check-Out Procedures: Check customer’s signature on the receipt matches the signature on the back of their card. Ask for Photo ID Check customer last four digits of the card number, matches the four number printed on the receipt.

Steps to Preventing Shoplifting 7. Signage, Signage, Signage Place a sign at or near your front door as it’s often the first place shoppers look Place signs up high where shoplifter will most likely check for surveillance cameras Language of signs should reflect your company’s brand and considers your target clientele Use loss prevention technology appropriate for your business.
