Tone Quiz Day! Find your scanton and get ready to rock those tone words! (Put away your phone and any study materials. Be sure to use a pencil on the scantron. Start on #51.) **When you finish your quiz, go turn in your scantron and quiz. Pick up “Fear” and start reading!

Choose your Destiny!

Close Reading of “Fear” by Gary Soto Read the passage together while honing in on your assigned skill(s). Be sure to annotate as you go. Red – Figurative language (focus on imagery and simile specifically) Blue – Diction (examine the meaning of the title, as well as unique word choice Soto uses) Orange – Syntax and organization Yellow – Characterization and POV Purple – Tone / tone shift Green – Conflict (internal and external)

The Big Questions: How does your focus enhance the meaning of the work as a whole? How does it impact the themes of the piece? What are the themes!?

Find your shape groups (stars, moons, squares, triangles, circles, and diamonds) Go around the group, sharing out about the skill you annotated for. Everyone should be taking notes as each person speaks. Be sure to reference specific passages

Close Reading of “Fear” by Gary Soto Overall plot points Figurative language Diction Syntax and organization Characterization and POV Tone Conflict Theme / Author’s purpose

HW Reminder: Read Language of Composition pages 1-25 – “Intro to Rhetoric” – for Friday! It’s on my website!
