(I) Causes of the Spanish-American War sympathy for Cuban independence movement Cubans fighting against Spain Led by Jose Marti b. How did Spanish deal with revolt? 1. Spanish sent General Valeriano “Butcher” Weyler who put Cubans in concentration camps (set example for Hitler and Stalin in later history)

c. 3rd cause: De Lome Letter b. 2nd cause Economic: US had millions of dollars invested in sugar plantations in Cuba c. 3rd cause: De Lome Letter Intercepted letter that was highly critical of President McKinley Printed on front page of NY Journal Americans considered it an insult against the US

d. Yellow Journalism: use sensational headlines and stories to sell newspapers 1. Competitors were William Randolph Hearst’s NY Journal and Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World 2. Exaggerate accounts of the war 3. Leads to American sympathy for the rebels, and a greater cry for American intervention 4. “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war”
