Cardiovascular System Part 1 Henderson

Cardiovascular System Composed of the heart, arteries, capillaries and veins. Transports nutrients to tissues and removes wastes from tissues. Standard Terms to know: Arrhythmia: Abnormal heart rhythm which can reduce the hearts ability to pump blood. Angina: Chest pain caused by insufficient amounts of oxygenated blood reaching the heart.

Cardiac Glycosides Obtained from the digitalis plant to increase the contraction of the heart and improve irregular heartbeats. Used for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)and some arrhythmias. Side Effects: nausea/vomiting, confusion, yellow/green halos in vision. BRAND GENERIC Lanoxin/Digitek Digoxin

Antiarrhythmics Help restore and maintain normal heart rhythms Side effects: Nausea/vomiting, confusion BRAND GENERIC Rythmol Propafenone Tambocor Flecanide Norpace Disopyramide Procan Procainamide Cordarone Amiodarone

AntiAnginals BRAND GENERIC Nitrostat Nitroglycerin Imdur Used to treat angina (chest pain) by decreasing the amount of blood that returns to the heart, which decreases heart rate and the resistance for the heart to pump. Side Effects: headaches (due to dilation of blood vessels, dizziness, low blood pressure NOTE: Nitroglycerine should avoid heat and needs to be dispensed in a glass bottle due to its absorption factors. BRAND GENERIC Nitrostat Nitroglycerin Imdur Isosorbide Mononitrate

Vasodilators Used to decrease blood pressure by dilating peripheral blood vessels to increase blood flow to extremities Side effects: Tachycardia BRAND GENERIC Apresoline Hydralazine

Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors Treat Erectile Dysfunction Treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Works to increase blood flow to the penis through vasodilation. Side Effects: headache, dizziness, flushing, dyspepsia Used in pulmonary hypertension through vasodilation. Side Effects: headache, dizziness, flushing, dyspepsia BRAND GENERIC Viagra Sildenafil Cialis Tadalafil Levitra Vardenafil BRAND GENERIC Revatio Sildenafil Adcirca Tadalafil
