What would a lunar eclipse look like if you were standing on the moon? The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 What would a lunar eclipse look like if you were standing on the moon?

The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 Today we are looking at the moon and the different phases of the moon By the end of the lesson we will have been successful when we have: Named the different apparent forms of the moon Explained how the different phases of the moon arise in terms of its orbit around the Earth.

The Sun and the Moon look about the same size from Earth, but they are not. The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon but is 400 times further away! The Moon takes just over 27 days to orbit the Earth. Only the surface of the Moon which faces the Sun will be illuminated (half of the sphere). sunlight

The Phases of the Moon sunlight These are called the phases of the Moon sunlight These are the views of the Moon from Earth.

The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 Now complete the questions on the sheet ‘All about the moon’ and ‘Phases of the Moon’

The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 Use the diagram below to explain in your books how the Moon creates the tides we experience on Earth. Key terms; High tide Low Tide Gravity Pull Liquid Mass Sun

The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 Can you suggest a reason why we might get a spring tide? (a particularly large tide)

What is the surface of the Moon like? The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 What is the surface of the Moon like?

Maria – ‘Seas’ – Ancient lava fields Highlands – Lighter regions of other igneous rock

The Phases of the Moon 26 June 2018 Mercury Sized impactor named: Thea strikes the Earth very early on in history and throws a huge amount of rock out. This joins together to form the Moon.

Why do only the Highlands show the cratered surface?

Questions about the Moon 1. The Moon does not produce its own light - how can we see it? 2. How long does it take the Moon to orbit the Earth? 3. Why do we always see the same side of the Moon? 4. Why do we only see a full Moon once a month? 5. What is a new Moon? 6. What force keeps the Moon in orbit around the Earth? 7. Why is there very little atmosphere on the Moon?
