Contemporary Issues and Archaeology AQA

Cultural resource management The role and impact of UNESCO and the Valetta convention on world heritage, including the concept of a ‘World Heritage Site’. The purpose and impact of protective legislation and guidelines regarding archaeology in England and Wales (including specifically the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act in 1979, the Treasure Act 1996 and planning guidelines). Debates about preservation versus excavation and the role of museums. The impact of the trade in antiquities.

Archaeology and Identity The relationship between indigenous peoples and archaeologists, including the repatriation of cultural resources. The excavation of sacred or burial sites. The role of archaeology in the construction of national or ethnic identity.
