Augustan Age A satirical era with writers such as Jonathan swift, Alexander Pope, and John Gay Most poets focused on the political situations that where going on at this time Writings were usually direct counterpoints and direct expansions of one another

What was going on during the Augustan era? After Queen Anne Stuart, George 1 took over and was not liked by many people He called himself Augustan, that is where the name the Augustan Era came about The Augustan era happened after The Restoration Era and ended with the death of Alexander Pope With the Augustan Era coming to an end the Romantic era was inevitable

Alexander Pope Pope dominated the Augustan Era with his satirical poetry He was disliked by most of his opponents which he called “The Dunces” The Dunces later influenced him to write a piece named “The Dunces”, one of his most famous pieces Pope was the first to imitate a writing piece and turn it into humor and satire.

John Gay Was a part of The Scribbleran Club Gay was one of the major voices of the Augustan Era He wrote a parody, “The Shepherd's Week” The Beggar’s Opera was his most famous piece Gay was a good friend of Alexander Pope. Gay's poetry shows a love of mankind and a gentle mocking of overly serious or pretentious individuals

Jonathan Swift Swifts tone was the complete opposite of Gay’s He was close friends with Alexander Pope Two of his biggest and most famous pieces where the modest proposal and Gulliver’s Travels His satirical pieces focused on the issues that where going on during this time
