Task 7 Saket

Active spectatorship active spectatorship is when the audience is invested in the film and the story; this involves questioning plot points. Harry potter has a active spectatorship; this can be seen on the internet where its not tough to find a harry potter fan blog or even a whole wiki based on the harry potter universe: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Harry_Potter This shows that there's a large active spectatorship that is highly invested in the story and characters.

Audience pleasure Audience pleasure is simply the reasons why the audiences like the film. In the case of the harry potter franchise audiences show their pleasure by attending huge events such as “leaky con” http://www.leakycon.com Or some people even write fan fiction and post them online for other harry potter fans to read and enjoy. https://www.fanfiction.net/book/Harry-Potter/

Frameworks of interpretation Interpretation is where the audience interpret the novel/movie/text in their own views. Most common interpretation happens in movie which have cliff hangers this is where the audience have figure out what happens. The harry potter movie franchise contains cliff hangers and concepts that the audiences interpret completely differently to each other. This can be seen online where people post fan theories about the story being told. https://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/1xy2md/the_harry_potter_series_ is_about_mental_illness/

intertextuality Intertextuality is when a film makes references and connections to other films. The harry potter franchise follow a very specific recipe to being a successful franchise. Harry potter and star wars have a lot of similarities to each other. http://www.bitrebels.com/geek/harry-potter-vs-star-wars-the-similarities-are- striking/ There are many theories online showing how harry potter takes queues from the star wars franchise. But I think something that a lot of directors do to show respect and honor to the star wars franchise is to have a character loose a hand just like Luke Skywalker in “star wars empire strikes”. Harry potter did this when Peter Pettigrew had to cut off his hand to bring Voldemort back to full strength in “harry potter and the goblet of fire” http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Peter_Pettigrew's_silver_hand

fandom Fandom is the audience who love the film and demonstrate certain behaviors as fans The harry potter fandom is quite large. Some fans of the franchise show their appreciation to the franchise by starting blogs to post fan theories or fan fictions and maybe even keep followers of the blog (who are other fans of the franchise as well) updated about any conventions or meet ups that might be taking places. http://everythingharrypotter.tumblr.com

Social networking Warner bros have long maintained a solid Facebook presence for the harry potter franchise. Nearly 29 million users have liked the page and this leads to other Facebook users who have some of these 29 million as a mutual friend to be alerted of the page. The page keeps fans of the franchise updated about any developments in the film franchise whether that be a new movie or like they have been doing for the past couple years just keeping the franchise relevant by constantly posting harry potter related content. https://www.facebook.com/harrypottermovie

Media literacy Media literacy is the knowledge and skills the audience have in interpreting the film. The harry potter franchise due to having such a huge following has a lot of fan reviews online that tend not to be very media literate although because of the fact that its such a huge Hollywood franchise there are media literate reviews online as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znaBCG9LQh8 http://www.theguardian.com/film/2011/jul/07/harry-potter-deathly-hallows-part- 2-review A media literate review like the guardian’s review for ”harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2” talks about plot points and technical aspects of media. Whereas a review that isn't media literate like the fan reviews on YouTube just talk about how they loved the movie but don’t talk about the technical aspects of media

Audience effect This is the ways in which the film makes the audience behave differently. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/3255972/Harry-Potter-fails-to-cast-spell-over- Professor-Richard-Dawkins.html Some believe that the harry potter franchise has a bad effect on kids; the article talks about how the franchise influences kids to be “anti-scientific” this is similar to a case in which a primary school had banned harry potter books due to the fact that “they go against the Bible’s teachings” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/693779.stm

Preferred readings A preferred reading is when the audience responds to the film in a dominant, negotiated or oppositional way. in the harry potter franchise this would mean that if after watching a harry potter movie you leave the cinema thinking that harry potter is the good guy and a hero you responded to the film in a dominant way. Although if you leave the cinema thinking that harry is not always good and makes questionable decisions sometime which make you hesitant to think he's a good guy; you responded to the film in a negotiated way. And finally if you leave the cinema thinking that harry is the bad guy and Voldemort is really the good guy in the story then you’ve responded to the film in a oppositional way.

Interactivity Interactivity is the way the audience interact with the film e.g. its marketing, production etc. The harry potter franchise allows its fans to visit the famous Hogwarts castle and the diagon alley; fans can come visit these sites and interact with the magical world. Kids can even take part in reenactments of famous scenes from the movie. https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/the-tour-experience/explore#t-0 https://www.universalorlando.com/Theme-Parks/Universal-Studios- Florida/Wizarding-World-of-Harry-Potter-Diagon-Alley.aspx

Pre and post viewing experiences This is what audiences might do before and after watching a film. Some fans of the franchise are existing fans of the books; fans of the books tend to read the books before watching the movie to remind themselves of the story. Although some fans of the franchise like to watch the movies first and then read the books due to the fact that the books usually have more detailed versions of the story which get cut and edited to be a movie script. Both allow the fans to feel more in tune with the story and enhance the viewing experience.

Conditions of reception This simply means the environment the viewing took place in. Harry potter although a global phenomenon seems to be a little better received in the UK; this could be due to many reasons but I believe the main reasoning behind this is quite simply just the fact that the movies are based in the UK and are filmed here.
