HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS There are 9 that we will study.

Digestive System Function: Processes Food by breaking it down and absorbing its nutrients. 2 types of digestion: Mechanical (Physical) Chemical

Digestive System Main Organs Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small intestines Liver Pancreas Large intestine

Respiratory System Function: Enables the exchange of O2 & CO2 between the blood and external environment.

Respiratory System Main Organs: Nose/Mouth Trachea Bronchial tubes Lungs Diaphragm

Circulatory System/ Transport system Function: Blood transports substances (food, oxygen, wastes, hormones) to and from all of the cells of the body.

Circulatory System Main Organs: Heart Arteries: blood away from the heart Veins: blood to the heart Blood: Red blood cells, White blood cells, Platelets, and Plasma

Excretory System Function: Removes metabolic wastes from the body. Includes 3 systems: Urinary (seen here) urine removed

Excretory System Main organs: Kidneys Liver Ureters Bladder Lungs Skin

Skeletal System Function: Supports the body and protects its organs

Skeletal System Main organs: Bones Tendons (muscle to bone) Cartilage (cushions the bones) Ligaments (bone to bone)

Muscular System Function: Moves the skeletal system

Nervous System Function: Sends messages throughout the body

Nervous System Main organs: Brain Spinal cord Nerves (neuron) Sense organs

Endocrine System Function: Produces and releases chemicals called hormones that regulate body functions. Main organ: Glands

Reproductive System Function: Produces new organisms of its own kind

Reproductive System Male Main organ: testes Female Main organ: Ovaries

Homeostasis The ability of an organism to maintain a stable internal environment even when the external environment changes. Also known as balance. Example: When you are cold, your body shivers to bring your body temperature up.
