Springboard 1.9 characterization

Review How do authors use narrative elements to create a story? What are key components we need to include in our personal narratives? Think about the brainstorming activity we completed…why are personal narratives difficult to write?

In your binder under “vocabulary” define characterization Characterization: the methods a writer used to reveal character the character’s appearance what the character says and does what other’s say about the character

Good Grief Charlie Brown What is Charlie Brown’s appearance? What are some things Charlie Brown says or does? What do other’s say about Charlie Brown?

Quickwrite (p. 18) On page 18, write a description of how you would spend $100.00 you found on the street. What do you think your choices reveal about you? What might you say or do? What would other’s say about your choices? What are some adjectives others might use to describe your choices Guess what???? You just completed a characterization of yourself! Wooo Hoooo!

A Hundred Bucks of Happy Take notes in the “my notes” section about the character in the story. What is their appearance What does the character say and do What would others say about this character What are some adjectives we would use to describe this character

Shaded areas The shaded areas are the choices the character makes The highlight on the first page shows the character’s first choice: to scoop up the money and walk away

Wrap up Has anyone had this happen to them? Tell me about a time when you had to make a decision about sharing something that had happened to you. What decisions have been made (pg. 19-22) What are some notes you took in the “my notes” section Summarize the story up to page 22 Predict! What in the world is gonna happen next?
