Lovely Hula Hands ——Caroline&Fish

—Backgrounds— -American standard of living: ignorance of and yet power over, one’s relations to native peoples. -Hawaii is the image of escape from the rawness and violence of daily American life. -But the political, economic, and cultural reality for most Hawaiians is hard ugly and cruel. -The destruction of the land and the prostitution of culture are planned and executed by multinational corporations, by huge landowners and by collaborationist state and county governments.

—Culture Prostitution— “ ‘Prostitution’ refers to the entire institution which defines a woman as an object of degraded and victimized sexual value for use and exchange through the medium of money.”

—Lands an fisheries, the outlying seas and the heavens —Language and dance —Familial relationships —Women

—Familial Relationship— -The lessons of Hawaiian genealogy are that human beings have a familial relationship to land and to the taro, Hawaiian elder siblings or kua’ana. -Hawaiians must cultivate and husband the land which will feed and provide for the Hawaiian people; this relationship called malama’anina or aloha’aina (care and love of the land) -pono: the balanced result of people and land work together harmoniously -ali’i: chiefs who organized production and appeased the gods maka’aninana: common people who worked the land and fed the chiefs -’Anina: land, means that which feeds Kama’aina: native-born people, means that child of the land
