The Despicable Man Daniel 11:21-35 Only God can say what will occur in the future with 100% accuracy - Isaiah 41:21-24; 44:6-8 46:9-10 Fulfilled prophecies are proofs of God’s sovereignty and that He will fulfill His promises for the future

Cautions Concerning God’s Sovereignty Do not used God’s sovereignty as a means to absolve your own sin God is absolutely holy and so is not the author of evil (Isaiah 6:3; Rev. 4:8: Habakkuk 1:13). God does not tempt anyone to evil (James 1:13). Man alone is responsible for his evil choices and will be judged (James 1:14; Rev. 20:12-13)

Cautions Concerning God’s Sovereignty God has the power and authority to judge by His standards - man’s standards are irrelevant to Him.

Cautions Concerning God’s Sovereignty God’s sovereignty should not be used as a foundation for any form of fatalism The book of truth is inscribed beforehand (Dan. 10:21; Ps. 139:16), but the detail is unknown to us Fatalism in all forms is contrary to God’s commandments to take action Prayer itself is contrary to fatalism - we are to pray and act (James 5:17)

Review An angel reveals the future of the nations that have a direct impact on Israel Daniel 11:1-20 covers the period from 535 B.C. to the death of Seleucus IV Philopator in 174 B.C.

The Despicable Man Daniel 11:21 Antiochus IV Epiphanes was a man of vile character and actions. He called himself, Theos Epiphanes, God Manifest - the people called him Epimanes, madman

The Despicable Man Daniel 11:21 He is the “small horn” described in Daniel 8 - an evil man directed by Satan He seized the kingdom by intrigue usurping his nephews whom he pretended to protect

Military Victories Daniel 11:22 With the help of the king of Pergamum, Antiochus defeated Heliodorus and then Ptolemy VI Philometor The “prince of the covenant” is either Onias the High Priest he had murdered or Philometor he defeated

Victory by Deception Daniel 11:23-24 He used a treaty to deceive Philometor and with a small force conquered more of Egypt than his fathers He used the booty to give his supporters lavish gifts, then was forced to leave by Rome

Victory by Treachery Daniel 11:25-26 Ptolemy Philometor had a larger army to defeat Antiochus, but lost due to treachery by his advisors His brother, Ptolemy Euergetes (Physcon) became king of Egypt

Two Liars Daniel 11:27 Antiochus captured Philometor and then befriended him to use as a pawn to regain control of Egypt After Philometor becomes king in Memphis & Antiochus leaves, he forms a co-regency with his brother

First Defilement of the Temple Daniel 11:28 On his way back to Syria, Antiochus took action against those who rebelled in Israel He slaughtered up to 80,000, sold 40,000 into slavery, looted the Temple and sacrificed a pig on its altar

Second Defilement of the Temple Daniel 11:28 Antiochus attacked again in 168 B.C. but his siege of Alexandria was broken by Roman intervention Antiochus decreed that everyone had to worship the Greek deities and executed those that would not

Second Defilement of the Temple Daniel 11:28 He stopped the regular sacrifices & replaced by pig sacrifices to the Greek gods Pagan rites & debauchery were performed and forced upon the Jews. Jews still trying to follow Mosaic Law and rituals were subject to execution A pagan altar to Zeus was erected over the altar of God - the Abomination of Desolation

The Purging of the People Daniel 11:32-35 Many Jews submitted to Antiochus’ decrees out of fear or by desire to pursue the enticements of sin Many Jews remained true to God despite hardship and death which separated the godly from the ungodly

The Purging of the People Daniel 11:32-35 Mattathias Maccabeus & his five sons led a revolt that eventually drove the Syrians out Some hypocritically joined the revolt only to be on the winning side - escape revenge or gain plunder Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple and freedom to worship God

The Purging of the People Daniel 11:32-35 Verse 35 - the persecutions to refine, purge and make pure will continue until a future “appointed time”

Conclusions The fulfillment of detailed prophecy gives proof that God is sovereign God has not laid aside His chosen people

Conclusions God uses persecution to bring about holy maturity (James 1:2-4; Rom. 5:3-8) and separate true & false We should be prepared for persecution (1 Peter; 2 Timothy 3:12) We do not need to fear it, for God will work out His plan in the midst of it (Romans 8:28; Phil. 1:6)
