Scramble This revision is going to go a bit out of order. Your brain wrote the paper. Therefore, your brain can predict what is being said before you read it to revise. To try to simulate what a reader who is not already anticipating your thought process, we are going to scramble it up. LABEL THE COMPONENTS of each paragraph as we go. This includes the steps of synthesis: IICE.

Introduction: 6-8 sentences No questions ! Is my introduction solid? Do I have an effective attention getting strategy? Do I have background that thoroughly familiarizes the reader with the theme and the texts to be discussed? Assume reader is familiar with the text. Is there really enough information? Do I have my thesis (at the end of the paragraph)? Underline or highlight it. Did I use connections between the attention getter and background? Background and thesis?

The Conclusion 6-8 sentences Did I rephrase my thesis? Did I restate key ideas to emphasize my point? Did I end with a powerful closing?(a really strong ending will connect back to the attention getting strategy used in the beginning of the introduction).

Body paragraphs: 8-10 sentences Do I have a topic sentence that relates to my thesis? Is it in logical order? Do I have at least 2 pieces of evidence that prove my point? Did I use synthesis in presenting these? (IICE) Do I thoroughly explain each piece of evidence and how it prove my argument? If not, I should add more information Do I have an effective closing sentence? Did I transition between ideas? Did I have a transition/logical connection when moving from paragraph to paragraph? IICE

In logical order Now, to see the big picture, we are going to reread it in order. You will start at the beginning and read through the conclusion, looking at the BIG PICTURE.

The big picture Was the argument clear and evident throughout my writing? Does my information flow easily from paragraph to paragraph? Did I stay focused and on topic? Is my writing well organized? Does it make sense? Did I vary my word choice to keep the reader interested? Did I avoid the use of personal pronouns (I, you, we)? Did I avoid contractions? Did I use strong diction? Where can my diction be improved? Did I use 3 additional sources to support and development my argument?
