Animal Farm Review: Chapter 4 By Ashleigh Miller Trent Jones Lauren

News of the rebellion has spread all across the country News of the rebellion has spread all across the country. Snowball and Napoleon have been sending pigeons to spread word of the only farm that is run by animals. Animal Farm’s neighbors, Mr. Pilkington of Foxwood and Mr. Fredrick of Pinchfield, mock the farm, yet fear it as they know there own animals could stage a similar rebellion. They both try to make sure no animal hears about it., to little avail. Early in October, word comes of an attack. Mr. Jones is on his way with half a dozen men with him, Jones in possession of a gun. Snowball leads a daring charge, but are soon driven into the farm. Then all the other animals come out in an ambush. Soon, the humans are driven out, and Animal Farm is safe, the only casualties being a single sheep. Boxer thought he had killed a human, which he was not happy with, but Snowball told him that it was necessary to the cause of a better future. The human turned out to be alive, though, and fled the farm. Snowball and boxer are given the award of Animal Hero, 1st Class. The Sheep is given Animal Hero 2nd Class. The animals name the fight, The Battle of Cowshed, and decide to celebrate the day like the Rebellion. Summary of Chapter 4:

“War is war. The only good human being is a dead one “War is war. The only good human being is a dead one.” – This quote shows that Snowball and the Majority of animal Farm show no remorse for humanity, the world will only be perfect when they’re gone. “Nevertheless they were both thoroughly frightened by the rebellion, and very anxious to prevent their own animals from learning too much about it.” – This quote shows that the owners of Foxwood and Pinchfield know well enough that their animals could rebel against if they learned too much about the rebellion at Manor Farm. They fear Animal farm. “The animals decided unanimously to create a military decoration , ‘Animal Hero First Class’ which was conferred there and then on Snowball and Boxer… There was also ‘Animal Hero Second Class’ which was conferred posthumously on the dead sheep.” - This quote shows that the animals have a sense of honor between them. But more importantly, it shows class separation. Snowball and Boxer are placed above the average animal, including the dead sheep, for doing things of somewhat equal bravery. (fighting bravely =/= dying in battle?) Quotations in Ch. 4

Questions for Ch. 4 What is the single maxim of Animalism? Describe The Battle of Cowshed: On an early October day, jones, wielding a gun, and 6 other men came to animal farm, intent on taking it back, after the men were pelted by pigeons, Snowball led a charge of Muriel, Benjamin, and all the sheep. They fought bravely, but had to retreat inside the farm, to the Cowshed. When the men drew close, all the cows, horses (excluding Mollie, who’s hiding), and pigs launched an ambush from the cowshed. Jones took a shot at Snowball, only grazing him, but killing a sheep. Within minutes all of the men had fled, except for one young man, who boxer had appeared to killed. Boxer regretted this, until the man, got up from being only stunned, and ran. Snowball and Boxer were given Animal Hero 1st Class. The dead sheep only received 2nd class. Animal Farm was safe, and the victory shall be celebrated every year, along with the rebellion. What is the single maxim of Animalism? “Death to humanity!” Questions for Ch. 4
